Battle for MX2 podium ends in tense final lap collision.
A series of post-race taunts from Dylan Walsh have done little to faze newfound MX2 rival Ryan Alexanderson, the pair at odds following their final-corner collision in Canberra’s second moto that left Walsh on the ground.
Alexanderson and Walsh were battling for third position during the latter stages of the final moto, with those final placings carrying potential influence over the round’s overall podium – which would have marked Alexanderson’s first in the class.
This prompted an aggressive final-turn pass from the JMP 360 Kawasaki recruit, which left KTM Racing Team’s Walsh on the ground. He expressed his displeasure in the aftermath, suggesting on the podium and in the media that the favour would be repaid at some point.
“I’m all for rubbing is racing and it is what it is,” Walsh told MotoOnline directly after the race. “But yeah, I think it’s pretty unnecessary… It’s a long year – I’ll catch him up at some point.”
Alexanderson responded: “Oh man, what can you do? We’re racers. I’m not even doing it for a living right now – I’ve got concreting first thing at six tomorrow morning. That’s the only thing I’ve got coming is work first thing in the morning, so I don’t care.
“I put everything on the line, put my heart out there every time, and I expect it from every rider out there. He made a mistake – he left the door open – and I had it on the pit board, ‘pass for podium,’ so I wanted my first MX2 podium.
“I wanted it badly. I’m never going to leave anything out there,” he continued. “So yeah, unfortunately, he’s upset about it, but I’d expect the same on the last lap, last corner. What can you do about it?”
Walsh recorded his second-consecutive podium of the year with P2 overall, drawing level with fellow KTM teammate Byron Dennis, who completed moto two in fifth. Alexanderson claimed third in the moto, although his 5-3 scorecard left him two points shy of the overall podium.
