Kiwi talent reflects on a milestone day at High Point.
High Point marked another breakout moment in the 2026 Pro Motocross Championship for Cole Davies, where the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider put together a perfect weekend, topping both qualifying sessions before sweeping the motos for his first overall victory. In this Five Questions feature, Kiwi talent Davies reflects on his dominant performance, finding his form outdoors, and why he can challenge for the 250MX title this season.
Cole, congratulations on your first overall win. Walk us through your day and tell us how it feels.
I mean, it was an unreal day. Both qualifying sessions were good, first in both qualifying sessions, and then I was able to get both moto wins. So, yeah, perfect day. I felt good. I feel like my starts are back and I’m feeling more like myself, so I’m ready to keep this going.
They were reporting that your dad said something to the effect that you were going to be much better when you got to the East Coast dirt. You got the podium early, and today you dominated. Did it have anything to do with being on this side of the country?
I don’t know, bro. It was just good starts and riding like myself. The first three rounds have been terrible, so it’s nice to turn it around and ride like I know I can. I’m still in this thing, so I’m just going to fight until the end.
The first two times you won a moto, you didn’t get on the overall podium, and then today you went 1-1. How good does it feel to back it up with two really great motos and get the whole job done?
Yeah, I mean, it was a perfect day. I feel like my starts are good now. Both my starts were good today. In the first moto, my holeshot clip was stuck down throughout the first three turns, so I was cooked. Then they came up the inside and I was back in around sixth or something, so I had to make my way through. Both starts were good, and in the second moto, I wheelied out of the turn and then tried to pop it out, and it worked. But no, my starts are back and I’m back.
I ran into you yesterday and you commented on how sick the track looked, and you told me you were really excited to get going. How quick did you get a feel for the track, and did it live up to your expectations from yesterday?
Yeah, I mean, obviously with me not riding any of these tracks before, to go out and qualify first in the first session, you have to get the track down quick. I feel like I got it down pretty quick and laid a little bit of it down. This track is good. It’s probably one of my favorites now, if not probably my favorite I’ve raced yet.
Last week was a tough one at Thunder Valley, but today was a complete turnaround with the victory at High Point. What specific adjustments did you make to the bike this week, and how did you adapt to the heavy clay here?
I would say it was just a bit of bad luck and bad starts last weekend. I was riding good, obviously I qualified first too, so I felt good. It was just two bad starts. I came from way back to sixth or something in the first moto, and then in the second one, I had absolutely no front brake and I cooked the throttle cable. Thunder Valley was a struggle for me through all of that. I feel like I’ve turned it around just by getting good starts, and I was still riding like I was last weekend, just with better starts.
