Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team manager Ian Harrison has credited the Coenen brothers following a bruising Saturday at Southwick, releasing a brief update on the status of 250MX winner Sacha Coenen and 450MX standout Lucas Coenen post-race.

Sacha Coenen is due to undergo further evaluation on a potential shoulder injury – initially reported to be a broken collarbone – while 19-year-old twin Lucas opted out of 450MX moto two after crashing heavily in the first race.

Both had qualified fastest in the morning and Sacha was able to convert that speed into the opening 250 class win of the round, however, Lucas fell in the first turn of 450 moto one and then later crashed in spectacular fashion after working his way as high as fourth.

Sacha then stamped his authority on the weekend by winning 250MX moto two, but only after he crashed heavily in the closing stages, only to remount and sprint to the checkered flag and another race victory for the overall. It was post-race where it became evident that he was experiencing severe pain in his right shoulder and skipping the podium altogether.

“We’re super-proud of Sacha, he went 1-1 today – it’s an amazing result,” Harrison reflected. “He did end up having a crash and banging up his shoulder, and tomorrow he’s going to get some further evaluation on it, but I’m blown away because it was a superhero effort and a great ride by him.

“And then Lucas showed tremendous speed through practice, and then had a crash in the first moto and took a really hard hit. We got him and the bike back to the truck, and we’re checking the bike to make sure that there is nothing there, and he decided that he would not race for the rest of the day.

“I get it, next weekend he has a GP – he’s leading the championship – so I get that part, and I am glad they came over. They definitely tried their best, we can’t say that they held anything back, and it was a great day with them.”

Lucas currently holds a 68-point advantage in the MXGP World Championship standings, while Sacha leads MX2 by 14 points following 11 of 19 rounds. The MXGP of Great Britain is scheduled for Foxhills this coming weekend between 18-19 July.
