A crash in Saturday’s qualification race made for a ‘pretty impossible’ Sunday for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen at Foxhills, with the current MXGP points-leader withdrawing from both motos at round 12 of the season.

The 19-year-old was involved in an opening-lap incident with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux, with the pair colliding mid-air before Coenen was thrown heavily to the ground.

Coenen was forced out of Saturday’s race, before pulling out of both motos on Sunday shortly after the gates dropped. With no points scored over the weekend, his championship lead was reduced from 68 points to just 11 over British GP winner Jeffrey Herlings (Honda HRC Petronas).

“Not much to say about the weekend,” reflected Coenen. “I got unlucky with the collision with Maxime [Renaux] on Saturday and then found a fence where I wanted to go with a high bank. I hurt my leg, and it was pretty impossible for me after that. Not much we can do, but we’ll try again in Loket.”

The severity of the leg injury is yet to be determined, leaving Coenen in a race against time to be fit for this weekend’s MXGP of Czech Republic as he continues his pursuit of a maiden premier class world title.
