Rib injury rules Gajser out for MXGP season-remainder

Five-time world champion Tim Gajser will sit out the final two rounds of the 2026 MXGP World Championship in China and Australia, after aggravating an existing rib injury in Turkey.
A brief statement from Yamaha Racing announced the news on Friday ahead of round 18 in Shanghai this weekend:
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Tim Gajser will not participate in the final two rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Shanghai, China, and Darwin, Australia, due to a rib injury sustained at the Dutch Grand Prix.
After racing with increasing discomfort at last weekend’s MXGP of Türkiye in Afyonkarahisar, where he impressively finished fourth overall, Gajser returned home this week for a specialist medical consultation.
A thorough assessment revealed the injury had been aggravated by racing in Türkiye, which prompted Gajser to decide to end his season early to focus on recovery, a decision supported by Yamaha and the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team.
Gajser’s first season with Monster Energy Yamaha has been a mixed one, currently third in the MXGP standings – almost 100 points clear of Red Bull KTM teammates Lucas Coenen – who has also concluded his GP season early – and Andrea Adamo entering the final rounds.
