MX2 contender to build upon P5 overall result at round six.
A podium result is the target for Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha’s Jayce Cosford across the final two MX2 rounds of the 2025 Penrite ProMX Championship, with a fifth-place finish in Canberra on Sunday serving as a convincing step in the right direction.
Sixth in moto one was followed by a fast start in the second encounter of the day, with Cosford running as high as second before a mishap dropped him back to fourth place, which is where he would finish for a solid P5 overall.
A fourth-place round finish at round three in Gillman – highlighted by P3 in moto two – had last year’s national number six one point shy of a podium behind KTM Racing Team’s Noah Ferguson, with finishing on the box the goal across the final two rounds.
“Overall it was a good day in Canberra,” the 24-year-old told MotoOnline. “Moto one, I struggled a bit for sixth, but the second one, I was feeling better and got off to a good start, running second for a while. I ended up making a mistake as the conditions were pretty gnarly, went down, and then picked myself up in fourth and rode it home from there for P5 overall.
“Our goal is to always be within the top-five at least, although it’s been pretty tough this year as the boys have elevated the level, as well as having a strong season – everyone is still in it with not many injuries. We’ve ticked a lot of boxes, although I want to land on the podium before the season’s done.”
Late weather arrived for the closing stages of the final MX2 moto in the ACT this past weekend, with both rain and lightning creating chaotic conditions to see out the race, which wreaked havoc for the field.
“It was pretty gnarly out there, I was surprised that we were still racing honestly,” continued Cosford. “Going over jumps, I couldn’t tell if it was the cameraman with the flash or the lightning in the background, so yeah, it was pretty full-on and super-dark at one point too. But all in all, I’m happy with the weekend.”
Cosford currently sits sixth overall in the MX2 championship standings entering the penultimate round, 24 points shy of Byron Dennis (KTM Racing Team) as the series prepares to head to Toowoomba on July 27.
