Captured: 2026 MXGP Rd8 Latvia

Unpacking moments and narratives that shaped the weekend.

Round eight of the MXGP World Championship at Kegums further intensified the championship battles in both MXGP and MX2, with another crucial weekend of racing unfolding in Latvia. Revisit the event through our Captured feature, showcasing a collection of key moments and talking points that helped define the weekend in illustrated form.

Latvia marked another difficult outing for Jeffrey Herlings and the Honda HRC Petronas program, with another technical failure leaving him with a DNF in race one. The MXGP title-contender has bled points over the last two weekends, only having the following to say on social media in the aftermath: “I have no words for what happened the last 7 days…”

Camden McLellan turned 22 years old on Sunday, with second place on the MX2 podium a perfect way to celebrate the occasion!

A true motocross picture – Red Bull KTM’s Lucas Coenen navigates a rutted up ramp en route to a 1-1-1 weekend.

That’s MXGP podium number two for Kay de Wolf via a 2-3 score on Sunday. The Dutchman now climbs to fifth in the premier class standings – not bad considering he missed round one.

The momentum is rolling for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing outfit at the moment. A perfect weekend for both Lucas and Sacha Coenen saw each extend their points lead, with the Thunder Valley round of the Pro Motocross Championship up next.

Guillem Farres looks…comfortable, in the ice bath here.

It’s been a subdued start – results-wise – to Tim Gajser’s tenure with Monster Energy Yamaha MXGP. He was fourth in Latvia with 5-4 results, and is also ranked fourth in the overall standings, occupying a bit of a no-man’s land between Romain Febvre in third and class newcomer de Wolf in fifth.

Mathis Valin achieved his fourth consecutive MX2 podium at the eighth round, continuing an impressive run of results for the Frenchman so far in 2026. He is rising in the overall standings too, now up to sixth entering the MXGP of Italy on June 21. His mechanic understood the assignment, too, delivering a pivotal message during the race.

While 16th on the results sheet doesn’t read well, 10th in moto one for Calvin Vlaanderen was only disrupted by an opening race fall in moto two, which resulted in a broken throttle cable and a DNF to his Ducati Desmo450 MX machine. He was also 10th in the qualification race, and while this likely isn’t where he and the team would like to be, it’s still more encouraging than a genuine 16th based on pace.

There was some bad news for the Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team, though, with Andrea Bonacorsi exiting the qualification race early due to a late-race crash that required a hospital visit and a successful surgery on a laceration.

Defending champion Febvre found the podium at Kegums, although much like Gajser, his series so far has been relatively subdued. He remains 32 points off Herlings in P2 even with the Dutchman’s two DNFs, although there is still plenty of racing to run in 2026.
