The curtains closed on the 2026 MXGP World Championship in Australia on the weekend, with Darwin’s purpose-built circuit at Hidden Valley Raceway serving as the site of the season-finale for the second year running. Just like that, Calvin Vlaanderen’s tenure at Red Bull Ducati comes to a close. Things never really clicked between the South African and his Desmo450 MX, and it’ll be interesting to see how he fares with the Honda Motoblouz SR Motul Team in 2027.

Another relationship that drew to a close in Darwin was that between 2025 world champion Romain Febvre and the Kawasaki Racing Team. They’ll still contest the Motocross of Nations (MXoN) together in two weeks’ time, although the MXGP of Australia marked the end of their world championship partnership after seven successful seasons.

It’s a case of what could’ve been for Sacha Coenen in 2026, with the Belgian – along with twin brother Lucas – now departing the world championship for the United States in 2027.

Guillem Farres was a revelation in 2026, going from a single podium last year to becoming MX2 world champion this season.

A podium finish in Darwin was a nice touch to Janis Reisulis’ debut MX2 season, with he and his brother Karlis finishing sixth and seventh in the MX2 classification, respectively. Watch for both of them in the years to come – the ingredients are there.

It was also a solid MXGP debut season for Tom Vialle in the premier category, and while he missed some time through injury mid-season, his form was otherwise consistent. Nine podiums, one win, and fourth in the standings are plenty of evidence that he’ll be firmly in the mix in the seasons to come.

While on one hand, you’re happy with Liam Everts’ late-season form, on the other, this is kind of what was expected from him all year long. He finished fourth overall in the MX2 standings for the third time – with sixth last year being the exception – meaning it’s time for him to take that next step and emerge as a genuine title threat next year.

Daniela Guillen is the 2026 FIM Women’s Motocross world champion! A clutch 1-1 performance sealed the deal in Darwin after coming under serious pressure from Kiara Fontanesi. American WMX champion Lachlan Turner was also present in Darwin, although could only manage fourth overall, behind Lotte van Drunen and Courtney Duncan.
