Unpacking moments and narratives that shaped the weekend.
The 10th round of the MXGP World Championship in Portugal marked the midway point of the 2026 season, with the title picture continuing to develop across both the MXGP and MX2 categories. Revisit the event through our Captured feature, showcasing a collection of key moments that helped define the weekend in illustrated form.
Both red plates belong to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas and Sacha Coenen at the halfway point of the season, with the twins setting the benchmark in the MXGP and MX2 categories.
Jeffrey Herlings toppled Lucas Coenen in Portugal, securing the overall with victory in moto two. The result marked the 117th grand prix win of his decorated career.
On the opposite end of the spectrum to ‘The Bullet’ was Latvian teenager Janis Reisulis, who claimed a career-first MX2 overall victory with 2-4 moto scores. We have a feeling it’s just the beginning for the 18-year-old.
Triumph Factory Racing’s Guillem Farres has been one of the revelations of the 2026 season. The Spaniard swept the motos in Portugal and also claimed maximum points in Saturday’s qualifying race, reducing his deficit to Sacha Coenen to just 32 points. Farres is firmly in the title fight, with his progression from 2025 to 2026 impossible to ignore.
A virus hampered Maxime Renaux at the MXGP of Portugal, limiting the Frenchman to eighth overall in the premier class. He’ll be hoping to make a full recovery ahead of next weekend’s South African GP, explaining: “The focus for next week is continuing the treatment, then hopefully I’ll be feeling much better for South Africa next weekend.”
Pick a rut! Honda HRC Petronas’ Tom Vialle navigates a deeply rutted up ramp in Portugal, with this shot highlighting just how demanding motocross can be.
It’s been a relatively quiet title defence for reigning MXGP world champion Romain Febvre, with Jeffrey Herlings and Lucas Coenen commanding much of the attention so far. A podium finish in Portugal was a timely response for the Frenchman, who sits third in the standings, 112 points behind Coenen.
Despite Herlings’ victory, Coenen actually extended his points lead in Portugal after the Belgian won Saturday’s qualifying race. That explains the smile on the podium, with Coenen limiting the damage despite missing out on the overall.
It was an unfortunate end to the weekend for French teenager Mathis Valin, who crashed during Saturday’s qualifying race. Wearing a neck brace as a precaution, it’s unclear whether he’ll line up in South Africa next weekend: “It was my own mistake, but my neck’s a bit stiff so I’m wearing a neck brace as a precaution. I’m going for further medical examinations tomorrow and hope to be in South Africa next weekend.”
One of the many aspects of a race weekend that often goes unnoticed. Camden McLellan’s Triumph Factory Racing machine undergoes a post-race fuel test following Sunday’s MX2 action.
