Two-time 450SX champion confirms 'there's a lot of truth to it'.
Australian supercross icon Chad Reed has opened up on the prospect of reviving his former TwoTwo Motorsports operation, continuing to explore potential partners as he considers a return to team ownership.
The two-time Monster Energy Supercross champion has expressed renewed interest in establishing his own team, with his young family’s own racing ambitions playing a central role in the pending comeback more than a decade after closing TwoTwo.
“You know, I’ve made massive changes in my life, moved back to Florida, purchased 120 acres,” Reed explained during his appearance as ambassador at Townsville’s Boost Mobile AUSX Supercross opener last weekend.
“My kids are chasing the dream and, you know, if my kid was to make it like he wants to, I don’t know that there’s a team that I would put him on, truthfully speaking. So at that point, you’re kind of like, ‘well, let’s do our own team again’, you know? So for me, it would be just awesome to run TwoTwo Motorsports again.
“I just love to give back, I love the sport, so yeah, there’s a lot of truth to it – it’s all happening. 2028 would be the plan, but that’s going to be tough, you know, to build buildings and order two brand-new semis. Those things have to happen in January to be ready.
“Realistically you’ve got to be rolling by the middle of August by the time you inherit some riders… And there’s not a lot of great riders up for contract in ’28. Truthfully, Tate can’t race Supercross until ’29, so waiting until then wouldn’t be all bad, but the goal would be to get in there as soon as we can.”
Reed, 44, also acknowledged speculation surrounding basketball great Michael Jordan’s possible involvement, confirming that discussions with multiple prospective investment partners have taken place behind the scenes. It isn’t expected that the team will launch prior to the 2028 or 2029 seasons.
“Is there truth to the Michael Jordans and a partner like that? 100 percent,” he added. “You know, those conversations are happening behind closed doors. I won’t do it alone – it will be a partner of some caliber of that. Will it be Michael? I don’t know that answer yet. So, I think it’s cool – really cool, actually – and I’m excited.”
Originally launched in 2011, TwoTwo Motorsports became a prominent independent operation in American Supercross and Pro Motocross, with Reed competing aboard Honda and then Kawasaki equipment before the team closed in 2015. He later formed CR22 Racing at a lesser scale with Mountain Motorsports backing during the closing stages of his career.
