Berry Sweet Yamaha on Gillman P6 overall.
Round three of Penrite ProMX 2026 at Gillman marked a convincing turnaround for Regan Duffy, with the Berry Sweet Yamaha rider charging to P6 overall and showing front-running speed throughout the day. In this Five Questions feature, Duffy details the changes made between rounds and the confidence gained from a breakthrough result in South Australia.
Regan, much better weekend for you at Gillman. You sort of mentioned to me yesterday, you made the decision to go spend some time with Ross Beaton at Beaton’s Pro Formula to just sharpen up on things – whatever you’ve done, it’s worked!
Yeah, definitely. It’s been a massive turnaround from [Canberra]. I was running around in 16th getting lapped, and this weekend I’m lapping the guys that I was battling with. So yeah, to be honest, it’s night and day. I made the decision to come over with my teammate, Sonny Pelicano. He was coming over anyway and I thought I’d tag along for the drive. But yeah, super happy to be back there hanging out with all those boys. I spent many years down there and obviously have a great relationship with Ross through that. It was good to just see that I can still do it, really. You know, I’ve had the full belief that that’s where I should be this whole year, but without putting it into practice and actually seeing it for yourself, it’s hard to truly believe it, but yeah, through these weeks I tagged on to the back of these boys a few times and I thought, alright, I’ve still got it – just got to work on the fitness.
What’s been the biggest difference between riding at home in Perth and what you’ve come to look for back here in the Melbourne area with the group?
It’s definitely the different crop of riders for sure. I mean, we’ve got great riders back home but the thing is everyone just rides for fun back home whereas you come to Melbourne and there’s 10 to 15 guys that are doing it as a job that you’re training with every day, so they take it very seriously. It’s structured every day, and when it’s that sort of environment you can’t mess around otherwise you’ll just get left in the dust.
A lot happier with today’s result, like you look like you’ve got a smile on your face. Do you go, ‘Okay, I’ve made a decision and it’s worked?’
Definitely, I backed myself coming into this really hard. I was telling everyone that wanted to hear about it this morning that today’s gonna be a good day. I tried to talk myself into a couple holeshots, but I think I came out third and fourth in the second – so next round we’ll get some holeshots as well to top it off.
Things to work on before Toowoomba, what’s the piece that you think you’re missing? You said fitness earlier. Is there anything else that you think needs to improve?
Yeah, it’s funny. I think if I went out for a run with any one of these guys I could keep up with them and go for as long as I like. But when you start getting to that top tier speed – I mean I can do it for three, four laps – then honestly, it’s just so difficult. So for me that top end speed and trying to do that a little bit more comfortably will be the ticket. I’ve still got decent enough speed. I don’t have sort of the top four speed but I believe I could be a fifth place guy at the minute. So yeah, I’ll work towards that and just try to build on some fitness in between now and Toowoomba.
Toowoomba up next, do you like the hills?
I mean I do but I do struggle at Toowoomba so I think it’s extra important for me to stay over East in this couple of week break and really work on some ruts and try to get a bit of confidence back in myself on those conditions.
