MX1 overall winner Kyle Webster responds with 1-2 results.
Defending MX1 champion Kyle Webster captured his first overall victory of the 2026 Penrite ProMX Championship at Gillman with a 1-2 scorecard, responding after a mixed start to the season. In this Debrief feature, Attards Honda Racing rider Webster reflects on his breakout result, the intensity of racing against title rival Jed Beaton, and a bunch more.
The importance of the win
Yeah, I think it’s important for the championship, but more so just for me to get a win. Championships are all well and good to think about now, but there’s still a lot of racing to go. So just for myself to get the win was a nice feeling.
Moto two performance
No, I don’t know. I just didn’t really have the intensity or the best feeling in that second moto. I think with how my year’s been going so far and hitting the deck every five minutes, I just wanted to get through that one. It doesn’t normally ride out like that for me, so it didn’t feel the best, but like I said, I’m happy to get the win this weekend. I don’t know, just put it down to one of those days. I just wasn’t feeling fantastic, I suppose.
Mistakes in opening rounds
I don’t really know to be honest. It was frustrating. I think it’s just unfortunately one of those things in the sport sometimes – a couple of rough weekends. It’s just the way it goes. It’s motocross, it’s up and down. I always say that – highest of highs, lowest of lows, so I think it’s just one of those things and hopefully this weekend we’ve ended it.
Satisfaction
Satisfied, for sure. Happy with the end result. Just wasn’t overly stoked with the second moto, but like I said, I think that was more so me wanting to get through today and not making any stupid mistakes again.
Bike setting changes
Yeah, definitely. The guys in the team have been working so hard with me to get that bike good and we’ve been doing a lot of testing, keeping Declyn and Matt up at night – so it’s been nice. No, it’s been good. I think we’ve definitely got it in the window, which is cool. But I think it’s just one of those things where you’re always looking to improve yourself and improve things around you.
Track preparation
I think some parts definitely needed to be touched up, but probably not as much as what they did [before moto one]. It kind of made a good third of the track just dead flat, which makes it hard because you can’t really pass or anything. It’s a tough one though, what do you do? It’s always half and half. Some people are happy with it, some people aren’t. I think probably some of the up-ramps could’ve used a bit of a touch-up and honestly that’s really it. Maybe the first two turns.
Heading to Toowoomba
I’m looking forward to it. I’m actually really looking forward to the next few tracks. A bit of hard-pack and something completely different, I think it’s going to be good. Hopefully a few more solid weeks of riding and we’ll be on.
Beaton’s aggression
I think it was just the way the track was today. Where else were you going to pass, really? You look at the first part of that race and we were all just locked together following each other. What else were you going to do? I blew wide in that turn, so it opened it up. It is what it is really, I’m not mad about that. I think the track was just so hard to pass on with how much they fixed it, so you kind of had to be a little aggressive. Even when I got around Dean, I had to push it into the inside there and run him a little wide. I think that’s just how it was.
