The MXGP of Germany will go down as a pivotal round of the 2023 MXGP World Championship as Jorge Prado claimed victory to extend his red-plate advantage and Jeffrey Herlings was forced to sit out the second moto following neck pain sustained in a massive race-one crash. Meanwhile, Liam Everts took a career-first overall victory in the MX2 World Championship.
Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) worked his way to lead in moto one before suffering a violent crash on the same part of the track he made two passes to move into the P1. He battled on to claim one championship point but did not contest the second moto.
It was ultimately a perfect weekend for Prado (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), with victory in the qualifying race and both motos to take the overall.
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Glenn Coldenhoff notched a 4-2 scorecard to land second overall, as Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez completed the podium with 3-4 finishes.
Also featuring inside the top five, Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha) was fourth on the day with a 2-5 scorecard, as Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre went P5 with 6-3 results.
Prado now leads the MXGP World Championship by 67 points ahead of Herlings, with Febvre in third and a further 39 points adrift.

The MXGP of Germany marked a milestone moment in the career of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Everts, claiming his first-ever MX2 overall victory in the world championship.
A 2-1 scorecard saw Everts emerge with the victory at Teutschenthal, leading teammate Andrea Adamo who secured second overall on the day after notching 3-2 results.
4-3 finishes were enough for Monster Energy Yamaha’s Thibault Benistant to land third overall in Germany, ahead of Roan Van De Moosdijk (Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing) and Mikkel Haarup (WZ Racing Team), the pair notching 5-5 and 8-4 results respectively.
It was teenage talent Lucas Coenen who stormed to victory in moto one, but a mechanical issue while leading in race two cost him a shot at the overall as he exited prematurely from the race.
Notably, former red plate-holder Kay de Wolf (Neestan Husqvarna Factory Racing) crashed in the qualifying race and looked to struggle with an injured foot in both races on his way to 11th overall. Jago Geerts made his return after breaking his arm in France and completed the event in P9.
Adamo now holds the MX2 red plate, leading the world championship by seven points ahead of Benistant, with de Wolf third and 17 points from the lead.
