P1 | Hunter Lawrence (Honda HRC Progressive):
It was a good day. The first moto, I was happy with my riding. The second moto was interesting – we got off to a good start, but Jett had a really good flow and pace. I was trying to catch on and do the same lines, but I just wasn’t able to make it click like I did in the first one; sometimes it just comes a little easier than others. I actually didn’t know that Jett crashed; he was up there inching away, and all of a sudden I couldn’t see him. I didn’t have a great lap, and I was like, ‘He’s on another level this moto!’ I think it just comes down to small things making a big difference – the first moto went my way, and the second moto went his way before his crash. We’re at a very similar level, and that level is so high, so it’s just kind of, ‘Which brother is it going to be this weekend?’ We just focus on what we think we need, preparation-wise, to be as ready as possible for the weekend. We don’t work against each other during the week, trying to get an edge, because you don’t get to work on your craft as much in that kind of atmosphere.
P2 | Haiden Deegan (Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing):
Yeah, today was pretty solid. I got off to a good qualifying session, then in moto one, I crashed in the first turn. My first turns are a little bit of bad luck right now, but we’re going to get that one figured out. In the second moto, I got a decent start, made my way up to third, and then got into second place, and got second overall. It was my first second overall in the 450 class. There’s only one place further you can go, and that’s first, so we’ll just keep on working.
P3 | Jett Lawrence (Honda HRC Progressive):
It was a rough day in the office. The first moto, I was feeling good but I just didn’t quite have it for HJ [Hunter] – I picked the smarter route and said, ‘You know what, you can have this one.’ I made some changes for the second moto, and I felt like Superman, I had good lines, and I was able to get around Hunter. I just made a small mistake in that soft section – put a little bit too much weight on the front, and it was enough to put me down. It looked like I got hit by a shotgun because the bike got on the back of my knee and it collapsed me. I got very lucky, and I’m just thankful to be okay after a rough weekend. I think I just need to get back closer to my normal schedule during the week. Being familiar with your bike and being comfortable with it is a big thing, and I think that’s why I crashed a lot today. I know what I need to do to be the Jett Lawrence everyone knows, but physically I’m not able to do that right now because of my ankle. I’m just trying to do the best I can and keep building.
P4 | RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing):
I’m happy and I’m thankful to finish in this position. It has been a grind recently – I reset this week, did things differently, and that’s the best that I have been by far. I had [Jorge Prado] right where I wanted him with four laps to go, and then lost a bit of time in the rollers. We were a little short [of the podium], but this is where I want to be battling, so I’m stoked on that.
P5 | Justin Barcia (Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati):
Wild day. Starting Friday we made a positive change to the chassis, but we still had a lot of suspension work to do that we didn’t get to during press day, so we went into first practice today kind of blind. The boys nailed it. The bike was a lot more comfortable, so we made a lot of progress there. It’s been a lot of teamwork. The Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati team is working hard and nobody is giving up. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s been a tricky year, but it feels like there’s finally some light at the end of the tunnel. I’m looking forward to next week and seeing how the bike works up in the trees. All in all, it was a great day.
P6 | Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing):
Today was a hard day. First moto, I got pushed out in the first corner, and we had to work our way towards the front with so many riders to pass. Then in moto two, the start was a little bit better, and we were fighting hard – I’ve been sick all week, so I was pushing myself a lot as I wasn’t able to do anything during the week. RJ [Hampshire] was close in the last few corners, but I held on for P3 in that moto, which was not a bad improvement. Thank you to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing for the effort. We’ll get there.
P7 | Dylan Ferrandis (Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati):
I had a good start in moto one and was trying to stay with the leaders, but I was lacking a little bit of pace today. It took me a while to get around Cooper Webb, but once I did I was able to close the gap to my teammate. In moto two, the start was okay, but I struggled with pace and intensity in the opening laps and lost a couple of positions before working my way back. That’s the best I could do today. We still have work to do and room to improve. Next weekend may be tough, but I’m looking forward to the break afterward so we can make another big step.
P8 | Benny Bloss (Liqui Moly Beta Factory Racing):
10-10 for eighth overall at Spring Creek today! Absolutely stoked with the bike all day, shoutout to my Liqui Moly Beta Factory Racing team.
250MX
P1| Julien Beaumer (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing):
Laying in that hospital bed [in Charlotte last year], I thought that maybe [my career] was over. But I’m here, I got my first 250MX win and didn’t make it easy on myself – that wasn’t the prettiest second moto, but my riding is awesome and the team is amazing. We’ve been working really hard together and we finally got the win – let’s keep it rolling!
P2 | Chance Hymas (Honda HRC Progressive):
It’s definitely been a long time coming, it’s been a pretty frustrating start to the summer for me, but it’s all about being here every weekend. My results have been one spot better each weekend, and that’s just how my mindset’s been. Winning this moto doesn’t change any of that – I’m still in that rebuilding process. I was finally out front for the first time all year, and I’m like, ‘Alright, I’m winning this moto.’ It’s awesome to confirm I can still do it, I can still be that guy, and it’s nice to have that light at the end of the tunnel now. The team has honestly put no pressure on me, coming back from my injury. We’re making gains, we’re seeing the progress, and we’re seeing the old Chance come back.
P3 | Levi Kitchen (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki):
It was definitely a tough day. I’m just thankful to be okay after that crash. It was a pretty big one, so huge thanks to my trainers for keeping me strong and to everyone who helps keep me protected – I’m grateful to walk away from that one. Thanks to all the fans for sticking behind me and keeping me motivated on a challenging day. It feels good to leave here with the red plate and keep this momentum rolling into Washougal.
P4 | Kayden Minear (Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing):
Millville was a very positive day. I struggled with bike setup all weekend, but I got two really good starts. I’m looking forward to Washougal.
P5 | Carson Mumford (AEO Powersports KTM):
Wow. I always knew I could do it. Even when I laid in hospital beds and my chances of racing the following year didn’t look good, I never stopped believing in myself. To all my close friends and family, I know I sounded and looked crazy year after year without coming close to reaching any of my goals but still continuing to work harder and dig deeper. Thank you so much AEO Powersports KTM for believing in me and getting me back to this point. To all the kids out there, in your darkest hours think of me. Never give up and be a good EXAMPLE!
P6 | Drew Adams (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki):
I’m really happy with the progress we made today. Qualifying P1 gave me confidence, and I felt like my speed was there all day. We still have some things to clean up, especially the starts, but coming through the pack for sixth overall feels like a solid step forward. Big thanks to the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki team for all the work they’ve put in. I’m excited to keep building and see what we can do at Washougal.
P7 | Daxton Bennick (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing):
Millville was good for me. I struggled pretty badly in practice, and mentally, I was doubting myself a little bit. But I put that all behind me, went out and rode my best. I got a good start in moto one and hung in there for fifth, which I was happy with. And then in the second moto, I had a big bobble on lap one, which cost me a lot of time, and then didn’t really find my flow until around halfway. Finishing with 5-10 results on the day, I can’t be too mad at it – it’s a big improvement and if we can keep building from here, I’ll be happy.
P8 | Ryder DiFrancesco (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing):
Round seven didn’t finish how I would have liked. I didn’t put myself in a great position off the starts, which can cost you a lot. My riding is great and so is my fitness – I just need to put myself in better positions and we’ll be good. We’ll clean a couple of things up and come out strong for Washougal.
