Shoulder and ankle surgery required after training incident.
Shoulder and ankle injuries will keep Gizmo Racing recruit Ty Masterpool sidelined for three-to-six months following a training incident leading into the Arlington round of Monster Energy Supercross.
Masterpool – who signed with the Yamaha-equipped privateer team ahead of Seattle’s sixth round of the season – suffered a shoulder separation while testing with the program, despite a crash not directly causing the injury.
With the intention of lining up at the Daytona Supercross after missing Arlington, further scans have revealed the severity of Masterpool’s shoulder injury and the need for surgery, with doctors advising an extended recovery time.
“As you can tell, we’re in a wheelchair and have to get three pretty big surgeries – didn’t even have a crash,” explained Masterpool. “I guess I’ll start from the beginning, I was here at the facility testing with the team, testing the 250, and my shoulder just got yanked forward, and it popped out.
“[It was] the first time popping a shoulder out, so kind of weird for it to come out like that, but yeah, shout out to my team manager – he popped it back in pretty quickly, so it’s good that it wasn’t out for too long.
“Later that week, we were just doing PT and I tried to ride, and the shoulder was just too unstable, so the team and I thought it was best to miss the home race and get ready for Daytona, which was the weekend after.
“And then, the MRI report came back, and the doctor said I have a pretty big tear in my labrum, as well as some other damage. They said if I don’t get surgery, it’ll just keep on popping out and create more damage, and obviously, that could lead to a bigger crash. So yeah, they’re saying three-to-six months for that.”
While on the sidelines, the 24-year-old underwent surgery on two troublesome ankles, addressing issues that have caused discomfort throughout his career: “I’ve pretty much just had bad ankles my whole life – I was just born with them. Every day I ride Supercross, I’m in quite a bit of pain, so since I have to be out for a while, I thought I would just fix the ankles
“The news kept on getting worse and worse by day, so it’s been a pretty hard pill to swallow getting three big surgeries without even having a crash. I tried to get all three surgeries at once, but they wouldn’t let that happen – I could only convince them to do both ankles. We’ll get the shoulder done here in the next few weeks, and I’ll keep you guys posted on my recovery.”
The latest injuries mark a difficult period in Masterpool’s career, with a lone P18 finish in Seattle’s 450SX main event coming after he was not renewed by Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki for the 2026 SMX World Championship season.
