A yellow caution light to be introduced ahead of Daytona round.
Updates to the Monster Energy Supercross Championship lighting signals have be implemented ahead of Daytona this weekend, including the introduction of a ‘yellow lead-in caution light’.
Arlington sparked controversy last weekend when multiple riders – including 250SX East winner Pierce Brown – jumped under red light/cross flag conditions, but avoided sanctioning.
This week, Supercross race direction has revised the caution light procedures in order to add clarity to the system in a bit to improve consistency:
According to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), the single red lead-in light – formerly regarded as the ‘pre-light’ – that gave advance notice before the red lights will now be changed from red to yellow. Going forward, it will be referred to as the yellow lead-in caution light.
This change aligns all on-track caution indicators under a consistent yellow designation, including yellow flags and all light signals. These each indicate a potentially hazardous situation on or near the race track, where riders must exercise caution, but jumping and passing is allowed.
There have been ‘no changes to the current rulebook regarding red lights or the red cross flag’, confirmed the AMA. Their deployment indicates a significant safety concern and takes precedence over all other flags, as riders must follow all directions given by race officials, passing is prohibited and riders must not double, triple, or step on/off.
