RedBud National marks first American outdoor for Desmo450 MX.
Italian icon Antonio Cairoli has recounted what was a largely ‘positive day’ at the Pro Motocross RedBud National on Saturday despite a moto two DNF, with the retired nine-time world champion debuting the intriguing new Ducati Desmo450 MX at the sixth round of season 2025.
In what was a major milestone for the Borgo Panigale-based brand’s first motocross project, Cairoli lined up with the support of renowned suspension company Factory Connection, as the combination looked to gain valuable data as they continue to develop the machine ahead of a fulltime US entry in 2026.
After posting the 10th-fastest qualifying time, 39-year-old Cairoli displayed speed across the two-moto format, racing to a ninth-place result in moto one, before running in P4 during the opening laps of race two. A reported electrical issue ultimately ended both he and the Desmo450 MX’s day early, with further testing and development set to continue in Millville this weekend.
“It was an amazing experience to ride here in RedBud,” reflected Cairoli. “In the first moto, I had some trouble during the first laps. I had a good start in P5, but my starting hook got stuck, and I lost a few positions. Then I was able to find a nice flow, and I came back to ninth – I was happy with my pace.
“In the second moto, my plan was to get another fast start and manage the opening laps better, but after a strong launch into fourth and while pushing for third, we had a small issue with the bike, and I was forced to pull out. Overall, it was still a positive day.
“We’re here to test and develop the bike, and these things can happen. Now we’re looking forward to a solid week of training and coming back ready to battle for another top 10 in Millville.”
Factory test rider Cairoli is currently on a world tour as such, equipped with the Desmo450 MX, having competed in three MXGP races to date this year, with a best overall finish of seventh at the MXGP of Great Britain in Matterly Basin.
He has suggested previously that any expectations are tempered, with the American entry being more of a marketing and developmental venture than anything else, just weeks before deliveries begin for the new models.
“This American trip is very interesting, especially from a commercial and marketing point of view,” continued Cairoli. “The US market is the most important in the world, and our main goal is to debut the Desmo450 MX in the USA just a few weeks before deliveries begin.
“I don’t have any particular ambitions – just to have fun and entertain the American fans.”
