After a frightening clash during the 250SX West class’ opening qualifying session on Saturday, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cole Davies has revealed the extent of injuries sustained in the incident that occurred between he and Jordon Smith, which include breaks to both his right arm and nose.

Davies appeared to abandon his sequence throughout a rhythm lane, opting to roll his way out of the section, which caught a trailing Triumph Racing rider Smith by surprise. Having been committed to his line, the number 19 landed directly on Davies, sending them both heavily into the ground.

After initially being attended to by the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit, Davies was then transferred to the local hospital for further evaluation, where he confirmed later in the evening the extent of his injuries.

“As of my condition right now, I have a broken arm and a broken nose,” revealed Davies. “[It] definitely could have been a lot worse, [I’m] grateful to come away somewhat okay, that was a very gnarly crash.

“Devastating way to end the Supercross season, but looking at the positives, it’s been one hell of a rookie season, [I’m] stoked with how it’s went. I have surgery tomorrow morning, [and] I’ll be back better and stronger.”

Two wins and a third overall placement in the 250 West division earned Davies the coveted 250SX Rookie of the Year award, in what was an ultra-successful debut professional season for the 17-year-old New Zealander.

As for Smith, a hematoma to his hip along with rib soreness would ultimately keep him out of action for the Salt Lake City finale, attempting to race during his heat race, only to withdraw early and return to the pits.

“That was one of the scariest crashes I’ve ever had,” recounted Smith. “As far as I go, I’m relatively okay. [I have] a huge hematoma on my hip and some rib soreness. We were both on fast laps, and I was already committed to the quad by the time he started rolling. That was a terrible situation, and hopefully Cole is okay.”

There’s currently no timeline on the return of Davies, as the Pro Motocross season commences at Fox Raceway in California on May 24.
