SMX Next revelation recounts title-winning night in Pittsburgh.
Emerging Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha talent Alexander Fedortsov has been a standout of this year’s SMX Next division, having shown front-running speed on multiple occasions before putting all the pieces together during Saturday night’s main event in Pittsburgh. Profiled takes a deeper dive into his season, which culminated in a Supercross championship-winning performance in Acrisure Stadium.
Looking back at the individual results of his 2025 season in the SMX Next class would tell an incomplete story, as a lone fifth-place finish at the first stop in Glendale was met with 22-17-19 scores in the three rounds that followed. Not an ideal run, however, there is more to that story.
Beginning at Daytona, the number 600 had sliced his way to the front of the field, holding a comfortable margin over second place as the clock wound down in the closing stages of the main event. It was exactly at this moment, however, that disaster would strike, as a flat tire with 30 seconds to go robbed him of what was a certain victory.
Then there was Birmingham, and admittedly, the young rider was at fault for this one as a tucked front-end after the Supercross triple – once again whilst comfortably leading – drew a premature end to his night, with the finish not reflective of his speed and talent.
This all changed in Pittsburgh, however, as Fedortsov finally capitalized on his potential, posting what was a dominant wire-to-wire ride at the final stop of the season, maintaining a three-second cushion at the head of the field, which was all the 18-year-old needed to seal a win that he was beginning to doubt would arrive.
“To get this last one is honestly awesome, as it’s been a little bit of a rough run in Supercross for me until now,” reflected Fedortsov post-race. “You keep on wondering if it’s going to happen because the last few have been really hard, but we kept working, and then today, I just tried to stay consistent all day.
“This feels really, really good. We put in so much work to get here, and so for both me and my family, this means a lot, and I can’t thank everyone enough for the support.”
A unique part of the amateur integration – especially on professional race teams – is the access to pro riders throughout the week, with the ability to learn from the best in the Supercross discipline a big part of the SMX Next rider development. For Fedortsov, that involves training with the likes of Coty Schock and Maximus Vohland, which contributes a great deal to a youthful rider’s program.
“Being able to ride at ClubMX and with Max is super-helpful for me to get the hang of Supercross – it’s been a big learning curve, but being around them helping me is a massive part of the program,” Fedortsov said. “Throughout this time, it’s just been a step-by-step process of getting more comfortable, and we never stopped working.”
The SMX Next class offers a great opportunity for the next generation riders to experience a complete Monster Energy Supercross weekend, and a diverse range of race winners this year highlights just how much experience these prospects can gain through the process before embarking on a pro career.
Fortunately for Fedortsov, ‘Lady Luck’ was on his side for the final round in Pennsylvania, with the capable young Floridian showing the industry and teams alike what he is capable of, executing on an important night in Acrisure Stadium after coming so close on multiple occasions.
