The current form of Chase Sexton continued in San Diego, even if the end result on paper was sixth after he made a costly mistake on the opening lap of the 450SX main event.

Sexton appears to have regained the outright speed that he was lacking last season and qualified quickest at round two, before he moved through the pack to second in heat two.

An error on the first lap in the final saw him go down before the whoops – effectively taking Red Bull KTM teammate Aaron Plessinger out of contention with him in the process – and Sexton completed the opening lap in 22nd. He salvaged a sixth-place result after putting on a charge from behind.

“It was a chaotic night for me,” Sexton said. “I fell on the first lap and had to do a lot of work to catch back up. I felt like my riding was really good and the bike felt good, so honestly, we just need to work on our starts and get ready for Anaheim 2. I feel pretty confident with where I’m at, so I’m excited.”

After winning Anaheim 1 the weekend prior, Sexton wore the red plate at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night, but now trails race winner Tomac by a single point with 15 rounds remaining in the Supercross series.
