A three-year arrangement will see Melbourne host the Australian round of the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) from this October, with Chad Reed set to come out of retirement for the 2022 season.

Supercross will return to Marvel Stadium for the first time since the AUS-X Open International in 2019, scheduled for 21-22 October in a deal that will span through 2024.

The opening round of the Australian Supercross Championship will take place on Friday evening before WSX takes charge on Saturday, plus there will be live performances by Peking Duk (Friday) and Bliss n Eso (Saturday). Reed will form part of the MDK Motorsports effort.

“SX Global is thrilled that Melbourne has secured a round of the prestigious championship for the people of Victoria and Australasian fans for the next three years until 2024,” SX Global president Tony Cochrane said. “The future of supercross is on a global stage and for Melbourne to host a round the championship adds to its impressive portfolio of major sporting events.

“With Australia’s loyal and passionate supercross fanbase, the exclusive WSX Australian Grand Prix will not only attract fans to Marvel Stadium from every corner of our country, but the globe, all eager to watch the best riders battle it out for World Supercross Championship glory. It’s also an opportunity to showcase what Melbourne has to offer, to our ever-growing international supercross audience across North America, Europe and Asia.”

SX Global managing director – motorsport, Adam Bailey added: “The addition of World Supercross legend and two-time world champion Chad Reed to the 10-team and 40 world-class rider field is incredible, and answers the call from Australian fans.

“Reed only adds to what is already a star-studded lineup of the world’s best supercross riders and it’s going to be great watching him mix it with the likes of [Ken] Roczen, [Dean] Wilson and [Justin] Brayton. The WSX Championship is the future of World Supercross.”
