450MX points leader Dylan Ferrandis said the off-weekend ‘doesn’t really matter’ to him as he begins to focus on bringing home the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship in his rookie season.

After three rounds, the premier class rookie is yet to miss a podium and has emerged as a serious contender for the 2021 crown, taking the points lead from Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) at the conclusion of round three at High Point.

With nearly as many weekends off as there have been races so far this season, Ferrandis says he will remain focused on the opportunity in front of him and either be training or recovering in the two weeks off.

“It doesn’t really matter for me if there’s a weekend off or not,” Ferrandis explained. “You can always improve physically or on the bike. I think for us as a team when we have some time like this, we use the time to try new parts on the bike, because we’re still at the point where we are trying to improve the bike and learning the bike.

“So yeah, there is still room to be better on that and for me, physically I’m feeling great. So for now it’s just to stay fit but not do to much and also stay in shape.”

The Frenchman has been vocal about how hard he’s been pushing the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha team to improve the bike during the week in their first year running Yamaha’s premier-class effort.

It’s clearly paying off as the entire team has put up impressive results so far this season, but the work will continue during the break as they begin to test the bike for upcoming track conditions.

“We’ll also try to ride in the conditions we will have in the next race,” he continued. “I know the next race is RedBud and then Southwick so maybe we’re going to start training a little bit in the sand. So [we’ll be] doing that and trying some stuff on the bike in the sand.

“I think that’s what every pro rider does during the weekend off. Maybe some do more fun stuff but for me, now I’m in a position where I’m chasing this championship, so the weekend off is going to be all about either workouts or recovery, so nothing really fun.”

Ferrandis will return to the track with the red-plate for round four at RedBud MX on 3 July, as he continues his bid for the 2021 crown.
